Did you know that it’s possible to turn plain cocoa powder into a tempting slab of dark chocolate…in a single afternoon? While it’s true that chocolate making is an art, it’s not as complicated as you think. Give it a try, and you’ll have the satisfaction of preparing something few people attempt to make, as well as the ultimate satisfaction of savoring your homemade confection.
At its most basic, you can make your own chocolate using just three ingredients: cocoa powder, coconut oil, and sugar. Other cooks do things a little differently, and make chocolate by combining cocoa powder with butter, sugar and milk and even a little flour and salt. Either way, it doesn’t take too much time, or equipment. A mixer or food processor, a good quality sauce pan with a double boiler insert, and sturdy silicone utensils will give you a good start, and you can pour your finished chocolate onto a baking sheet to harden, or use molds to create shapes.
After you harden your chocolate (that is, if you don’t eat it right away), you have a few more options. You can separate it into pieces of chocolate bark, break it up to create homemade chocolate chips, or re-melt it whenever you need chocolate sauce.
To store your chocolate, wrap securely in plastic wrap and keep at room temperature, away from heat and sunlight. Chocolate can also be refrigerated or frozen when sealed in freezer-weight plastic. Allow it to return to room temperature before unwrapping.
