Preheat oven to 350°F/180°C.
Spread apples in a 7x10-in. oval au gratin pan, 8-in. square cake pan, or shallow 2-qt. casserole dish. Stir in raisins, 1/4 c. of the sugar and cinnamon; spread out evenly and set aside.
In a medium bowl, stir together flour and remaining 1/4 c. sugar. Using a pastry blander or 2 knives, cut in butter and cheese until mixture resembles coarse meal. Sprinkle mixture evenly over apples.
Bake in an oven until topping is golden and apples are tender when pierced, about 1 hour. Serve warm or at room temperature; top with frozen yogurt, if desired.
