Homemade pizza is a fun way to bring your family together for dinner! Pizza can be baked with various toppings and in different sizes, so kids and adults alike can enjoy making their own pizza or a family pie (or two!) to share. It’s easy with Calphalon tools and a few tricks of the trade. Start with what you like and then try new ingredients as you wish.
Pizza has three main parts: the crust (dough), sauce and toppings, including cheese and other delicious items. Delivery pizza will become history once you discover the magic of creating your own homemade pizza.
Dough: Pizza dough is simply bread dough with olive oil added to the mix. It does require some advance planning so the dough has time to rise.
Sauce: A traditional simple tomato sauce is always appropriate. Or use something completely different, such as pesto, roasted garlic paste or flavored olive oil. Making pies with different sauces provides variety in taste and color.
Cheese: Cheese provides great flavor, especially when combining two flavors such as fresh Mozzarella and Provolone or Fontina. Try your favorites such as Muenster or a blue cheese. Add a sprinkle of fresh-grated Parmesan, if desired, during the end of the baking time for extra zing.
Toppings: Pizza toppings are limited only by your palate and imagination. Pair traditional favorites such as pepperoni, mushrooms or onions, with sundried tomato, goat cheese, or meatballs for added flavor. Just don’t overload so each individual flavor comes through.
Optional Garnishes: Chopped or torn basil leaves, arugula, chopped fresh tomato, or simply a little drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil is delicious.
