Eating healthy requires a different approach to food, according to Chef Nancy Waldeck, of Taste and Savor, Inc. A ‘flexitarian’, she eats 80 percent fruits, vegetables and grains and 20 percent fish, meat, and poultry to stay healthy.
“When you look at food holistically,” explains Chef Waldeck, “eating good food is not only easy, it becomes your lifestyle. It doesn’t have that dread factor that dieting imposes. You take baby steps rather than consuming the entire elephant! That way there are no drastic changes in your life, which translates into better adherence to healthy eating.”
Chef Waldeck’s better eating philosophy is based on this premise:
- Better Ingredients.
- Better Ways to Cook.
- Better Portion Control.
Her healthy eating suggestions for basic food preparation include:
- Using Calphalon nonstick cookware (requires less oil, fat & butter)
- Slow cooking (its convenience is another plus!)
- Sautéing in olive oil
- Frying (on occasion, and maintaining the oil at 350ºF)
The key to these cooking methods is critical balance—alternating your food preparation technique. It’s also important not to overcook your foods so that the nutrient and vitamins are not lost…”We eat with our eyes first,” explains Chef Waldeck. “And overcooking makes food appear less appealing to the eye.”
“Eating better makes you feel better,” according to Chef Waldeck. However, incorporating exercise is an important element of a healthy lifestyle. Try these tips:
- Walk at least 30 minutes daily to boost your metabolism and increase your energy level.
- In fact, Chef Waldeck notes that, “the more muscle your body has, the more calories you burn, so you can actually eat more and be healthy!”
- For snacks, eat raw almonds and dried fruits. (Rather than ice cream and cinnamon buns!)
- Use portion control.
- Look for bright colors in food, which typically indicates it has more antioxidants and vitamins.
